Nebraska Area Code Information
(402 and 531)
Nebraska is currently using three area codes. A new area code 531 was put into service as of March 26, 2011 and is assigned to provide numbering relief in area code 402. This is the only area code overlay utilized by Nebraska.
Area code 402 originally covered all of Nebraska when it was established in 1947. It was not until 1955 that Nebraska experienced sufficient growth in population and telephone use to need an additional area code. It was at that time that area code 402 was split to form area code 308.
After the split, area code 402 covered eastern Nebraska which included Lincoln while 308 covered western Nebraska which included North Platte.
