Nebraska is currently using two area codes. Nebraska currently has one area code, 531, which is assigned to provide numbering
relief but is not yet in service. Nebraska does not utilize any area code overlays
Area code 402 originally covered all of Nebraska when it was established in 1947. It was not until 1955 that Nebraska
experienced sufficient growth in population and telephone use to need an additional area code. It was at that time that area code 402 was split to form area code 308.
After the split, area code 402
covered eastern Nebraska which included Lincoln while 308 covered western Nebraska which included North Platte.
