California is currently using twenty-seven area codes four of which were created as area code overlays. California currently
has an additional seven area codes which are assigned to provide numbering relief but are not yet in service.
California originally had three area codes, 213, 415, and 916 when the numbering system
was established in 1947. By 1951, just four years later, California experienced sufficient growth in population and telephone use to need an additional area code. To meet this increase in demand area code
213 was split in 1951 to form area code 714. During the 1950's California introduced five new area codes. Throughout the 1960s and the 1970s no new area codes were introduced. Two area codes were put into
service in the 1980s and from 1991-1997 California put fifteen area codes into service. All fifteen were the result of area code splits. Between 2004 and 2009 five new area codes were introduced of which
four are area code overlays. |
