Kansas is currently using four area codes. Kansas does not utilize any area code overlays
Kansas originally had two
area codes, 316 and 913, when the numbering system was established in 1947. It was not until thirty years later in 1997 that Kansas experienced sufficient growth in population and telephone use to need an
additional area code. To meet this increase in demand there were two area code splits. The first split was in 1997 and the second was in 2001.
Changes and History of Kansas Area Codes:

Area code 316 was put into service. In 2001 Area code 316 was split to form area code 620.

Area code 913 was put into service. In 1997 Area code 913 was split to form
area code 785.
07/20/1997
Area code 785 was put into service. Area code 785 was created from a split of area code 913.
02/03/2001
Area code 620 was put into service. Area code 620 was
