Minnesota Area Codes

Minnesota is currently using seven area codes. Minnesota does not utilize any area code overlays.

Minnesota originally had two area codes, 218 and 612, when the numbering system was established in 1947. In only seven years Minnesota experienced sufficient growth in population and telephone use to need an additional area code. To meet this increase in demand area code 218 and 612 were split to form area code 507.

These three area codes were sufficient for more than forty years until 1996 when area code 320 was put into service. Area code 612, one of the two original area codes, was split to form area code 320.  From 1947 until 1996 Minnesota utilized three area codes. From 1996 to 2000 Minnesota found it necessary to add four additional area codes.
