Utah is currently using three area codes. Utah has had one area code split in 1997 when area code 801 was split to
form area code 435. Utah has one area code overlay plan, often called an overlay complex.
Area code 801 originally covered all of Utah when it was established in 1947. It was fifty years later in 1997
that Utah experienced sufficient growth in population and telephone use to need an additional area code. It was at that time that area code 801 was split to form area code 435.
Today area code 801 and
the overlay area code 385 covers the Salt Lake City Metro area including Ogden and Provo. Area code 435 covers the rest of the state.
