Missouri Area Codes

Missouri is currently using six area codes. Missouri currently has two area codes which are assigned to provide numbering relief but are not yet in service.

Missouri originally had two area codes, 314 and 816, assigned when the numbering system was established in 1947. In only three years Missouri experienced sufficient growth in population and telephone use to need an additional area code. To meet this increase in demand area code 314 was split in 1950 to form area code 417.

It was forty-four years later before the demand for new numbers in Missouri required more area codes. From 1947 to 1996 Missouri had utilized three area codes. Then in only three years between 1996 and 1999 Missouri added three additional area codes.
