Tennessee Area Code Overlays
(615 and 629)

Tennessee is currently using seven area codes. Tennessee does not utilize any area code overlays.

Tennessee originally had one area code, 901, when the numbering system was established in 1947. By 1954 Tennessee experienced sufficient growth in population and telephone use to need an additional area code. To meet this increase in demand area code 901 was split in 1954 to form area code 615. It was forty-one years later before the demand for new numbers in Tennessee required a split of area code 615 to form area code 423. For forty-eight years between 1947 and 1995 two area codes were sufficient to meet the numbering needs in Tennessee. In the span of less than six years between 1995 and 2001 Tennessee put four new area codes into service due.
