Wisconsin Area Codes

Wisconsin Area Code Overlays
(534 and 715)

Wisconsin is currently using six area codes. Wisconsin currently has one area code 534 which was implemented on August 14, 2010 to provide numbering relief as an area code overlay for area code 715. Another area code is assigned as an overlay area code but is not yet in service.

Wisconsin originally had two area codes, 414 and 715, when the numbering system was established in 1947. By 1955 Wisconsin experienced sufficient growth in population and telephone use to need an additional area code. To meet this increase in demand area codes 414 and 715 were split in 1955 to form area code 608. It was forty-two years later before the demand for new numbers in Wisconsin required a second split of area code 414 to form area code 920 in 1997. Two years later in 1999 area code 414 was split a third time to form area code 262.
