Louisiana Area Codes

Louisiana is currently using five area codes. Louisiana is not utilizing any area code overlays.

Louisiana originally had one area code, 504, when the numbering system was established in 1947. Ten years later in 1957 Louisiana had experienced sufficient growth in population and telephone use to need an additional area code. To meet this increase in demand area code 504 was split in 1957 to form area code 318. It was forty-one years later in 1998 before the demand for new numbers in Louisiana required a second split of area code 504 to form area code 225. Area code 504 was split one additional time in 2000 to form area code 985. In all area code 504 was split three times.

Area code 318, which had been formed by a split of area code 504 in 1957, was itself split in 1999 to form area code 337. Area code 318 has only been split once.
