North Carolina is currently using seven area codes. North Carolina utilizes one area code overlay plan, often called an
overlay complex and currently has one area code which is assigned to provide numbering relief but is not yet in service.
North Carolina originally had one area code, 704, when the numbering system was
established in 1947. By 1954 North Carolina experienced sufficient growth in population and telephone use to need an additional area code. To meet this increase in demand area code 704 was split in 1954 to
form area code 919. It was thirty-nine years later before the demand for new numbers in North Carolina required a split of area code 919 to form area code 910. For forty-six years between 1947 and 1993 two
area codes were sufficient to meet the numbering needs in North Carolina. In the span of eight years from 1993 to 2001 North Carolina put five new area codes into service due to the tremendous growth in the
state.
