North Carolina Area Code Overlays
(336 and 743) - (704 and 980)
(919 and 984)

North Carolina is currently using nine area codes. North Carolina utilizes three area code overlay plans, often called an overlay complex.

North Carolina originally had one area code, 704, when the numbering system was established in 1947. By 1954 North Carolina experienced sufficient growth in population and telephone use to need an additional area code. To meet this increase in demand area code 704 was split in 1954 to form area code 919. It was thirty-nine years later before the demand for new numbers in North Carolina required a split of area code 919 to form area code 910. For forty-six years between 1947 and 1993 two area codes were sufficient to meet the numbering needs in North Carolina. In the span of eight years from 1993 to 2001 North Carolina put five new area codes into service due to the tremendous growth in the state.
