Georgia is currently using nine area codes. Georgia utilizes three area code overlay plans, often called an overlay complex.

Area code 404 originally covered all of Georgia when it was established in 1947. It was not until 1954 that Georgia experienced sufficient growth in population and telephone use to need an additional area code.

Changes and History of Georgia Area Codes:

Area code 404 was put into service. In 1954 area code 404 was split to form area code 912. In 1992 area code 404 was split to form area code 706. In 1995 area code 404 was split to form area code 770. In 1998 area code 404 was overlaid with area code 678.

Area code 912 was put into service. Area code 912 was created from a split of area code 404. In 2000 Area code 912 was split to form area codes 229 and 478.

Area code 706 was put into service. Area code 706 was created from a split of area code 404. In 2006 area code 706 was overlaid with area code 762.

08/01/1995
Area code 770 was put into service. Area code 770 was created from a split of area code 404. In 1998 area code 770 was overlaid with area code 678.

01/06/1998
Area code 678 was put into service. Area code 678 is an overlay of area codes 404 and 770.

08/01/2000
Area code 229 was put into service. Area code 229 was created from a split of area code 912.

08/01/2000
Area code 478 was put into service. Area code 478 was created from a split of area code 912.

05/16/2006
Area code 762 was put into service. Area code 762 is an overlay of area code 706.

02/10/2010
Area code 470 was put into service. Area code 470 is is an overlay of area codes 404, 770 and 678.
