Texas is currently using twenty-four area codes four of which were created as area code overlays. Texas is utilizing four area
code overlay plans, often called overlay complexes. Texas currently has one additional area code which has been assigned to provide numbering relief but is not yet in service.
Texas originally had
four area codes, 214, 512, 713, and 915 when the numbering system was established in 1947. By 1953, just six years later, Texas experienced sufficient growth in population and telephone use to need an
additional area code. To meet this increase in demand area code 214 was split in 1953 to form area code 817. In 1957 area codes 817 and 915 were split to form area code 806. Throughout the 1960s and the
1970s no new area codes were introduced. One new area code, 409 was put into service in 1982. In the 1990s eleven area codes were introduced. Another six area codes were introduced between 2000-2003.
