Mahwah, NJ is currently using area code 201. Although at this time Mahwah is only utilizing area code 201, Mahwah, NJ is
within the boundaries of an area code overlay in which area codes 201 and 551 serve the same geographic area. The area code overlay which is in use in Mahwah, NJ today was established in 2001 at which time
area code 551 was created as an overlay of area code 201. Area code 201 originally covered the entire state of New Jersey, including Mahwah, New Jersey when it was established in 1947. Ten digit dialing
(area code + seven digit number) is necessary in Mahwah because two different homes in the same geographic area can have the same seven digit phone number but each would have a different area code.
