Arizona Area Code Information

Arizona Area Codes

Arizona is currently using five area codes. Arizona has had five area code splits and does not utilize any area code overlays

Area code 602 originally covered all of Arizona when it was established in 1947. It was not until 1995 that Arizona experienced sufficient growth in population and telephone use to need an additional area code. It was at that time that area code 602 was split to form area code 520. Area Code 602 was split again in 1999 to form area codes 480 and 623.

On November 9, 2021 the Arizona Corporation Commission announced that effective 09/12/2023 area codes 480, 602 and 623 will form a new area code overlay 480/602/623. These area codes are currently used by the city of Phoenix and surround communities Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa, Tempe, Scottsdale, and Sun Lakes in the counties of Maricopa and Pinal. On August 12, 2023 mandatory 10 digit dialing will be required in area codes 480, 602 and 623.
