Kentucky Area Code Overlays
(270 and 364)

Kentucky is currently using five area codes. Kentucky has one area code overlay plan, often called an overlay complex.

Kentucky originally had one area code, 502, when the numbering system was established in 1947. By 1955 Kentucky experienced sufficient growth in population and telephone use to need an additional area code. To meet this increase in demand area code 502 was split in 1955 to form area code 606. It was forty-four years later before the demand for new numbers in Kentucky required a second split of area code 502 to form area code 270. In 2000 a second split occurred and area code 606 was split to form area code 859.
