Area Code 249 History:
Area code 249 was put into service as an overlay of area code 705.
Effective March 5, 2011 ten digit dialing became mandatory. Ten digit dialing (area code + seven digit number) is necessary when two area codes cover the same geographic area.

Marie, Timmins, and Temiskaming Shores in addition to many smaller communities within the service area.
