Definitions
Area Code Overlay - Area Code Split

Quebec is currently using six area codes. Quebec is utilizing two area code overlay plans, often called overlay complexes. Quebec currently has one area code, 579, which have been assigned to provide numbering relief for area code 450 which is schedule to be in service on 08/21/2010.

Quebec originally had two area codes when the numbering system was established in 1947. By 1957 Quebec experienced sufficient growth in population and telephone use to need an additional area codes. To meet this increase in demand area code 514 was split to form area code 819. This split resulted in three area codes 418,514 and 819, being in use by 1957.

These three area codes were sufficient to meet the numbering needs in Quebec for forty-one years. Then in 1998 area code 514 was split again to form area code 450. In 2006 and 2008 two area code overalys were put into service. Area code 438 overlays area code 514 and area code 581 overlays 418.

Today area code 418 serves the Quebec City which is the capital of Quebec, as well as, Chibougamau,
Côte-N ord, Gaspé Peninsula and Saint-Georges. Area code 514 covers the Island of Montreal, Île Perrot and Île Bizard. Area code 819 covers western Quebec including the National Capital Region, Drumondville, Gatineau, Magog, Rouyn-Noranda, Shawinigan, Sherbrooke, Trois-Rivires, and Victoriaville. Area code 450 covers central-southern Quebec including the suburbs of Montreal, but not Montreal itself, and the cities of Laval and Longueuil.
