Country Calling Codes A Country Calling Code is used to dial into a country or territory. Country calling codes are assigned to individual countries, territories and places around the world to facilitate international calling. The ITU-T (Telecommunication Standardization Sector) based  in Geneva, Switzerland defines the standards for Country Calling Codes in the E.164 Recommendations titled "The International Public Telecommunication Numbering Plan." Country Calling Codes are dialed as a prefix. An International Call Prefix or "International Access Code" is a number code used to dial out of a country or territory. The International Call Prefix (number code used to dial out of a country) is dialed first followed by the Country Calling Code (number code use to dial into a country) followed by any area code and then the local phone number. Areas served by the NANPA (North American Numbering Plan) are assigned area codes as if they were within a single country. The numbering plan includes 24 countries and territories including all of the United States, Canada and many Caribbean Islands. When a caller in one area of the North American Numbering Plan calls another area the number 1 is dialed first, followed by the area code, then the seven digit phone number. As an example a caller in the United States calling Bermuda would dial 1-441 followed by the seven digit phone number.
