codes 601 and 769 serve the same geographic area. The area code overlay which is in use in Meridian, MS today was established in 2005 at which time area code 769 was created as an overlay of area code 601.
Area code 601 was the original area code assigned to the entire state of Mississippi, including Meridian, when it was established in 1947. Ten digit dialing (area code + seven digit number) is necessary in
Meridian, MS because two different homes in the same geographic area can have the same seven digit phone number but each would have a different area code. In addition to Meridian, MS area code
601 and 769 serve the larger communities of Clinton, Hattiesburg, Jackson, McComb, Natchez, Pearl, Ridgeland and Vicksburg, along with many smaller communities in central Mississippi. Meridian, MS does not
